HAIRPRINT: A Leading Natural Hair Colour Solution

If your salon is on the cutting edge of hair care, you’ll know that clients are becoming more conscious of what they choose to put onto their hair. Many will be looking at healthier alternatives to chemical-laden hair dyes, which are often toxic and can cause allergic reactions.

With the green hair care revolution growing steadily, savvy salons are offering more natural solutions for their clients. The HAIRPRINT range is a real game-changer, with results that have to be seen to be believed.

What makes HAIRPRINT Unique?

Here are the fast facts about this exciting new hair colour range:

  • HAIRPRINT is not a dye; it’s a unique colour healing and restoration treatment.
  • The formula uses the hair’s genetic structure to restore its natural pigment.
  • It’s completely natural and free of harsh artificial ingredients.
  • It’s safe and non-toxic, suitable for those with chemical sensitivities.
  • The three-step treatment takes 75-90 minutes to apply and develop.
  • It doesn’t strip the hair, and doesn’t paint the hair with colour like conventional dyes.
  • HAIRPRINT is suitable for all hair types and ethnicities, including Caucasian, Asian and African hair.
  • The treatment softens and strengthens the hair, leaving it beautifully silky.
  • The range works for black hair, brown hair and all shades in-between, but there is no formula suitable for naturally red or blonde hair just yet.
  • It’s the first of its kind in the world!

As a product, HAIRPRINT has a pedigree to be proud of. It was created by Dr John Warner, a renowned chemist often called “the father of green chemistry”.

Dr Warner took his cue from nature, using the principles of biomimicry to create this hair colour solution. He even went as far as testing it on himself – with impressive results!

Hair that has been coloured with HAIRPRINT looks and feels healthier, stronger, softer and more natural than hair that’s been treated with ordinary dyes.

Spring Clean your Hair Care Regime

Winter is coming to an end, and sunny days are stretching ahead. You might already be feeling that “Spring fever”, the urge to clean up and clear out the old so you can usher in the new.

One of the best places to start, is with your beauty products – clear away the old chemical-laden gunk, and replace it with fresh, natural alternatives that actively nourish your hair and skin.

Get a Bright New Start with HAIRPRINT

Spring is all about new growth, and if you’re looking to breathe life back into tired, weighed-down hair, the HAIRPRINT range will do just that.

When hair starts to lose its pigment and vitality, you may be tempted to slather it with chemical dyes. But with HAIRPRINT, you can unlock the colour that’s still present in the greying strands of hair, and restore it in a completely natural way.

How does it Work?

HAIRPRINT isn’t a dye. It’s a three-step colour healing treatment, created to return grey hair to its original shade.

Instead of stripping and painting the hair, like ordinary dyes do, HAIRPRINT actually infuses your hair with its natural pigment, using your body’s unique melanin packing system. (This special melanin structure is what we call your “hair print” – it’s unique to you, just like your fingerprints!)

HAIRPRINT gives you natural-looking results, and gorgeous silky texture, helping to recapture your hair’s youthful vitality.

The treatment can be used effectively on brown, dark brown or black hair, as well as body hair and facial hair. There is no formula available for blonde or red hair just yet (but watch this space).

The HAIRPRINT selection also includes natural shampoos and conditioners, which remove product build-up and enhance the health of your hair and scalp.

You can enjoy a restorative HAIRPRINT treatment at one of our selected salons, or apply it at home – it takes just 90 minutes and the results are worth it.

Get back in touch with your roots! Embrace your natural colour this Spring, and shine.

Does HAIRPRINT work on Blonde hair?

HAIRPRINT does not work nor should it ever be applied to naturally (or dyed) blonde, strawberry blonde, red, auburn, or brown hair with natural red tones. We will continue to research into developing HAIRPRINT Colour Restorer solutions for these natural hair colours.

How was HAIRPRINT invented?

Dr John Warner of the Warner Babcock Institute for Green Chemistry (Massachusetts) is the mastermind behind HAIRPRINT. An honorary chemist, Dr Warner, has received many awards including the Perkin Medal – widely recognised as the highest honour in American chemistry.

Over a four-year period, Dr Warner was able to perfect a safe, non-toxic process that imitates what hair follicles do – infuse hair with its natural pigment.

When Warner began his journey to find a natural way to colour hair, he began with working on grey hair cuttings that took on varying shades, ranging from light brown to jet-black.

Unable to achieve consistent results, Warner inquired what the problem was and was advised by his supplier that the cuttings were not from a single donor. They were in fact from many sources. That is when Warner realised that HAIRPRINT might be restoring natural colour to the hair.

He tested this theory by applying it to his hair, which had gone grey as a young man at Princeton. In just 80 minutes, it returned his hair to the same colour he remembered having thirty years before applying the treatment. HAIRPRINT was born.

Once exposed to HAIRPRINT, the hair’s natural pigment though currently, grey hair accepts the pigments which are being restored to the hair via the treatment, resulting in your natural colour appearing. Dr Warner knew this when he began experimenting. What he did not expect was how HAIPRINT transformed the condition of the hair, making it stronger, giving it more body and lustre.

Rather than thinking of HAIRPRINT as a colouring agent, think of it as a Hair Healing System that just happens to restore grey hair to its natural colour.

To learn more about the science of HAIRPRINT, please watch our short series of  videos.

What causes hair to go grey?

Before we can understand what causes grey hair, we must look at how hair gets it colour.

Melanogenesis is the process of melanin production by melanocyte cells. The result of the production, known as pigments,  we find pigment in our skin, hair and eyes. Melanogenesis can be used to explain how the sun colours your skin, how your eyes get their colour and how our hair colours in its follicle.  When hair goes grey, the body has stopped producing natural melanin.

HAIRPRINT mimics this process using toners to nudge the colour restoring treatment to lean in one direction or another. Your hair however ultimately chooses the colour.

Some of the known causes of grey hair outside of natural ageing process include:

  • Diet — A lack of certain vitamins and minerals can accelerate grey hair, especially vitamins B-12, C, E, zinc and copper. Anaemia and thyroid conditions can also be a cause.  Junk food can cause oxidative stress to the body. Eating well is the lesson.
  • Stress – Stress as a result of lack of sleep, overworking, extreme shock, certain pharmaceuticals, and smoking can accelerate changes in the hair. Chemotherapy has been known to turn hair grey almost overnight.
  • Hair dyes — Powerful scavengers are found in permanent hair dyes that grab electrons wherever they can causing oxidative stress and sensitization that can lead to serious allergies, as well as potentially damage your DNA. The molecules in hair dye are so small that they could easily pass through the skin into your bloodstream.  We do not know what hair dyes do inside the body. There are two basic types of cells in the follicle: keratinocytes which make hair fibre and melanocytes producing pigment. Both can be affected by the constant exposure to toxic chemicals. Ironically, dyeing may accelerate the greying of hair and can damage the capacity of follicles that produce the healthier hair.
  • Genetics — People of different ethnic origin tend to go grey at various rates. Caucasians go grey the fastest. Slower than Caucasians are Asians. The most fortunate are African-Americans who become grey later in life. Some indigenous people, however, can go well into their eighties with their original hair colour.
  • Age — Fundamentally hair changes with age, sooner for some, later for others. Half the population has 50% grey hair by the age of fifty.

Grey hair is beautiful, and there is nothing more gracious than embracing and accepting our age. With HAIRPRINT you are in control of how much grey you want to cover.

Some of our clients deliberately do not colour the hairline because the overall look is so natural with HAIRPRINT, allowing you to keep that ” distinguished look”  that grey hair provides for some. Some feel and look better and are more comfortable with less grey. HAIRPRINT allows you to enhance your natural beauty without causing you harm.

How is HAIRPRINT different to hair dyes?

HAIRPRINT is different to hair dyes. In conventional colouring, the chemical known as phenylenediamine (PPD) is the key covering and colouring grey hair.

Hair dyes work by opening up both the cuticle and the cortex of the hair using ammonia or MEA, removing the natural colour (pigment) that is there and placing a new colour or rather a coal tar dye, in its place. Couplers, oxidizers and harsh chemicals are also present in conventional dyes.

HAIRPRINT, however, replaces the missing pigment common to darker hair colours (light brown to black hair)

During the colour restoration treatment:

  • New eumelanin is synthesised within the cortex structure of the hair restoring its natural colour.
  • This process is called melanogenesis and occurs regularly in the human body.
  • HAIRPRINT creates the precursors of eumelanin, relatively small monomers that penetrate the cuticle layer into the cortex.
  • Forming eumelanin pigments that polymerise becoming too large to be washed or abraded out.

Check out these videos with the creator of HAIRPRINT Dr John Warner as he explains the concept and product further.

What is HAIRPRINT and how does it work?

HAIRPRINT Colour Restorer is a natural colour treatment restoring the natural eumelanin – aka pigment or colour, to your hair.

We’re giving you the hue you were born with, the way nature intended. The pigment that creates the colour of your hair lives in the hair follicle. HAIRPRINT Colour Restorer imitates that biological process and adds back the natural colour (eumelanin) from the outside. Working with vegetable extracts from velvet beans, we have created a simple, safe and harmless way to restore grey hair.

We do not use any dyes, PPD, PTD, coal tars, paraben’s, high levels of ammonia or peroxide to strip colour. There is no smell, itching or burning, treatment restores and strengthens the hair while adding body and improving the natural shine of your hair, where applied. The eumelanin pigment, naturally produced in hair, is a protein and while your hair changes from grey back to its natural colour where applied, you are also adding protein to the hair.

HAIRPRINT works by restoring the natural pigment to your hair. Because all ‘hair prints’ are as unique as fingerprints, the structure of your ‘hair print’ determines how the pigment arranges itself. It also determines how light refracts, and refraction determines how we perceive colour. Dyes do not do this. That is why hair saturated with natural pigment always looks different and better than hair that is chemically dyed.

During the HAIRPRINT treatment, new eumelanin synthesises within the cortex of the hair. This process is called melanogenesis and happens continuously within the body.

What colour must I use?

HAIRPRINT Colour Chart works with the universal colour code used in the hair industry to determine the actual colour of your hair.

When you are deciding which HAIRPRINT Colour Restorer kit to use; we suggest looking at the hair at the nape of your neck. After that, use the Colour Chart and descriptions below. If you find that you are between two colours, we recommend choosing a darker colour.

Referred to as the base with the scale going from 1 – 10:

1 – Black

2 – Very Dark Brown

3 – Dark Brown

4 – Brown

5 – Light Brown

6 – Dark Blonde (where possibly blonde as a child)

7 – Blonde

8 – Light Blonde

9 – Very Light Blonde

10 – Lightest Blonde

Please note the following:

If your natural hair colour is between one and six i.e. black to dark blonde where you were possibly blond as a child, you CAN use HAIRPRINT.

There are two types of melanin produced through melanogenesis namely, eumelanin and pheomelanin. The latter type of melanin has not come to fruition as yet. Colour bases ranging from one – six are rich with eumelanin and arranged differently to determine the natural colour and depth of the colour base.

NB! Are you still unsure of your natural base? Opt for a darker shade according to the HAIRPRINT hair colour chart provided.

Be sure that you learn enough about blockers and residue-free hair to get the colour you want.

Application Options – When do I use 1 or 2 kits?

When considering the best application option, whether to use one or two, base your choice on the length of your hair and the percentage of grey at your roots.

If you are considering the Half Kit Application method, be certain to mix the correct weights and store remaining product correctly.

Remember the following when considering this application process:

The Half Kit application method is suited for:

  • Short hair that is 5 -15cm in length or shorter.
  • Consider this method when doing roots on normal to fine hair, with a grey percentage of 30% or less.
  • Facial Hair/Beards
Single Kit Application
The Single Kit application method is suited for:
  • Consider this approach when doing roots on normal, fine or thin hair types with a grey percentage of less than 50% grey.
  • New growth hair measures between 15- 30cm in length.
Double Kit Application

The Double Kit application method is suited for:

  • Very coarse and thick hair.
  • The percentage grey hair is over 50%.
  • Untreated (natural hair) no longer than shoulder length.
  • Resistant or stubborn grey hair.
  • White hair is not ideal for HAIRPRINT. However, if you really want to see if there is any memory left in hair totally devoid of pigment and maybe memory, (the map where the pigment should be naturally) we would suggest you continue applying the Restore step until you get the deposit of the Hairprint natural pigments back into the hair. At this point, you would apply the complete step. Your hair will reveal whether it will accept the mimicry of Hairprints pigments. This may be a long and expensive exercise, generally not advised.

Begin your HAIRPRINT treatment with our Clarifying, Chelating or Exfoliating shampoo. For the best results, make sure that your hair is residue free.

Best Application Method – Standard Application

Choose the best application method for your hair type and its current condition.

You might need to check the colour chart to ensure you will be using the right shade.

The success of HAIRPRINT lies in the state of the hair. If the hair seems blocked or coated with anything, the colour restorer will not be able to penetrate the hair shaft.

The Standard application is a simpler process for hair that is:

  • Less than 50% grey.
  • If the percentage of coverage does not concern you with the odd grey hair staying uncoloured.
  • Not colour resistant/stubborn.

The Regrowth application is the same as the standard application.

When concentrating on regrowth or roots only, protect the ends you don’t want to colour.

You would protect the ends in the following scenarios:

  • You don’t want the ends any darker.
  • Your mid-lengths and ends are not in good condition and are compromised/damaged.
  • Your hair is currently much lighter than what your natural hair used to be.

The Resistant application is ideal for hair that is stubborn to absorbing colour or has proven to be resistant in the past. Essentially you are refilling the hair shaft that once had eumelanin.

  • The natural colour will not restore in one colour application.
  • You are in control of how much natural colour and pigment you restore.
  • You can repeat the three steps as regularly as you like. You are mostly filling an empty “cylinder” with pigment. Once it is full, it will possibly start to go darker than intended.
  • Try the double application method upon your first HAIRPRINT treatment.

Maintenance – regularity of treatments

Often we are asked questions regarding the maintenance of hair treated with HAIRPRINT Colour Restorer. There is, however, no definitive answer to the question “how often do I need to apply the treatment?” Through the treatment, you restore melanin and its essential amino acids to your hair lost as you age.

There are however various scenarios that you may find yourself in:

1. No grey hair present.  If you do not have grey hair, but you wish to grow out your natural colour, this solution is for you. If you have moved to cleaner products and have subsequently noticed your hair lacks lustre, the HAIRPRINT Colour Restorer treatment is for you.HAIRPRINT will feed your hair, adding vitality and shine to your previously dull locks.

 2. Beginning stages of grey. HAIRPRINT is the best option for you if you find yourself at the beginning stages of going grey and you have had little to no exposure to chemical dyes. The regularity of treatment application is up to you, depends on the percentage of grey you have and how quickly your hair grows. For maintenance, read more on using half a kit.

For the above options, make use of the standard application method.

3. Currently using chemical hair dyes every 4 – 8 weeks. If you find yourself colouring your grey hair monthly, HAIRPRINT gives you a safer option. With each application of the Colour Restorer, the coverage improves. The regrowth softens and when compared to conventional colouring and its regrowth, seems less harsh.

Read up on our transition tips, when considering whether or not to colour your ends, and when to protect them.

Please note: Half a kit is often sufficient when doing roots only but may prove challenging in the case of very thick or coarse hair.

The regularity of colour treatments is dependent on hair growth and personal goals. For some clients, this means the treatment application takes place every 4-6 weeks while others apply more frequently.

4. Resistant  Grey or  White Hair. If you find your hair to be resistant or stubborn a double application can be done to improve coverage. When restoring the melanin, we are filling an empty tube of tiny little particles; it might take a while for all the pockets to fill again. We have found the more often the treatment is applied, the more receptive the hair becomes.

Resistant Application for stubborn grey or coarse hair

The resistant application is ideal for stubborn grey hair. If your hair is very coarse, we recommend this application.

N.B. Before you begin, first determine if the Cleansing shampoos are necessary to remove blockers that could inhibit the process if there is residue or build up on the hair.

With this method, you are making use of the ‘double’ application within the two steps of the Restore process. Keep in mind that it now becomes four ‘applications’ of Restore and then the Complete.

How to PREPARE the hair for the resistant application.
  • Wet hair and shampoo with the full sachet of Prepare in the kit. Work bicarbonate of soda into the shampoo at the roots for stubborn areas.
  • Leave on for anywhere from 5 minutes – 30 minutes
  • Rinse
  • Remove excess water by towel drying the hair.
Step One

1. Mix 1 x Restore Liquid and 1 x Restore Powder components from the kit into a non-aluminium bowl. ( Depending on the length and density of your hair, you might want to split the sachets, using 1 sachet twice for the first 2 applications of Restore)

2. Once mixed the Restore swells into a mousse and changes in colour from pale pink to a dark red. Apply the mixture within 6 minutes if possible, working into the hair as you would a conditioner. Saturate hard to cover areas such as hairline and temples. Work into the lengths of the hair. The longer and more porous your hair is, the less product is needed.

3. Process for 15 minutes.

4. When the time is up, do not rinse. Instead, wipe away any excess colour restorer with paper towel.

1.Follow the same steps as above to apply your second application. Mixing Restore Liquid and Restore Powder components. (If you have split a kit use the second half of the first set of sachets)

2. Apply working into the hair and mixture already in your hair, or into the lower parts of hair not yet covered. Make sure the mixture is massaged thoroughly into the hair.

3. Leave on for 15 minutes. Do not rinse. Use your hands squeeze out any excess mixture.

4. Follow the same steps as above to apply the second mixture of Restore over the first application.

5. Work in like a conditioner to the mix already on your hair, or into the lower portions of hair not yet covered. Make sure the mixture is massaged thoroughly into the hair.

6. Leave on for 15 minutes.

7. Rinse well and remove excess water by towel drying the hair.

Step Two

1. Repeat the above process using the last powder & liquid sachets marked Restore.  Apply the mixture as quickly as you can.

2. Set the timer for 15 minutes.

3. When the time is up, use your hands to wipe away any excess colour restorer with paper towel.

1. Repeat the  restore process as above using the of last powder & liquid sachets marked Restore. Apply over and into the mix already on your hair.

3. Set timer for 15 minutes.

4. When time is up, rinse with warm water.

5. Towel dry to remove excess water.

Step Three

1. Mix the Liquid and Powder sachets marked Complete into a non-aluminum bowl.

2. Apply the gel-like mixture as quickly as you can. You will notice that formula #3 turns purple and does not expand like the first two steps. It produces a gentle heat.

3. Process for 10 minutes.

4. Do not rinse. Wipe excess off with paper towel/

Step Three – Part 2 COMPLETE

1. Repeat the process as above mixing the contents of the Complete sachets  (Liquid & Powder).

2. Repeat the process again with your second set/portion of Complete liquid and powder.

3. Massage into the hair to combine both mixes.

4. Adjust the timer for 15 minutes.

5. Rinse well and finish with HAIRPRINT Shampoo and Conditioner.

Upkeep and maintenance vary on the desired outcome, and colouring needs. Doing only the roots or regrowth is dependent on you, your hair, the percentage of grey you have and the result you are after.

If you have any questions or don’t get the result you want, get in touch.

Guide on How to Use HAIRPRINT

This groundbreaking natural colour restorer is perfect for every hair type, any ethnicity and gender.

How you apply the HAIRPRINT Colour Restorer treatment will depend on the condition of your hair, the amount of grey and whether it is resistant or not. Different application methods are available to suit your hair type, current condition and desired amount of grey coverage.

The standard and previously chemically treated methods are essentially the same. For resistant grey hair we recommend starting with the standard application, then gauging if you would want better coverage.

The amount of grey coverage you desire will determine how many the steps are applied and which method you use.

Which application is for me?

Natural Hair | First Time Users

The standard application of this groundbreaking natural colour treatment is very straightforward.

Do your homework to understand the products you use in your current hair care regime to prepare the hair and scalp for the journey. If the hair is residue-free with nothing blocking the treatment, HAIRPRINT will work. Guaranteed!

The standard application for hair that is virginal i.e. 100% chemical free, is the best place to start and gauge how your hair responds. Ensure you have chosen the right colour.
From there you can try different application methods if need be. If you need advice get in touch!

Chemically Treated Hair | Permed-Dyed-Relaxed-Waved

If your hair has currently undergone a chemical treatment, i.e., it has been permed, relaxed, dyed, highlighted or bleached,  go through the Transition application process. Protecting hair that has been compromised by chemical treatment might be necessary.

For information follow the link – What is causing the damage?

We advise the standard application on regrowth while protecting ends that might need it; possibly splitting a kit. Ensure you understand removing blockers and residue-free hair before beginning your journey to hair that is full of vitality.

Resistant Application | Coarse-Thick- Stubborn Grey

When hair is resistant, it could be trying to tell you its time to accept some of your greys. The beauty of Hairprint Colour Restorer is you can take some of the greys away, thereby still looking your age but not being 100% grey.

If you would like to achieve a ” just going grey” result, try the standard application first. If you have grey coverage of more than 50% and would like would like a total coverage, a resistant application may be necessary.

Check here to see if you might need two kits.

How many kits do I need?

Half Kit | Regrowth-Short Hair-Facial Hair

A half kit application is ideal for

Please consult our post on Hair Residue and Blockers before using the HAIRPRINT Colour Restorer for best results.

Follow the application methods for step by step instructions.

Single Kit | Natural Hair, Regrowth Application

A single kit application is ideal for:

  • Hair that is less than 50% grey
  • Hair between 12- 30 cm’s from root to tips ( Note: thickness of hair does influence this application)

Please consult our post on Hair Residue and Blockers before using the HAIRPRINT Colour Restorer for best results.

Follow the application methods for step by step instructions.

Double Kit | Resistant Grey, Coarse, Thick Hair

When to use two kits

Ageing causes the porosity of our hair to change and is the main contributor to the hair not accepting pigments or in this case eumelanin.  For some, it might be a problem, for others not.

  • For hair that is more than 50% grey hair or;
  • Resistant non-porous grey; white hair; coarse, thick hair;
  • More than 60 cm’s from root to end especially if thick/dense,
  • Hairprint is not for those whose hair is completely grey/white.

Please consult our post on Hair Residue, and Blockers before using HAIRPRINT.

During application

After Step 1- My Hair Is Still Grey (1st Restore)

HAIRPRINT is a three-step colour restoring process, so if your hair is still grey after Step 1, don’t panic!  Once all application stages are completed entirely, your hair will show full results. Continue to Step 2 (Restore again) and Step 3 (Complete).  If you remain uncertain on how to apply, please ease your mind reading through the best application methods.

Continue to Step 2 (Restore again) and Step 3 (Complete).  If you remain uncertain on how to apply, please ease your mind by reading through the best application method for your hair type and be sure if you will need 1 or 2 kits.

If you need assistance in deciding on the number of kits to apply, read our write up on using 1 or 2 kits.

After Step 2 - My Hair Is Still Grey (2nd Restore)

Your hair will still be grey after Step 2 because HAIRPRINT is a three-step process. Your hair will not show complete results until after the final step is complete. It is the last step of Restore that gives you the final result. Please continue to Step 3. If you have any questions on the application process, please visit our How to Apply page to review the instructions.

After Step 3 - My Hair Is Still Grey (3rd Complete)

If your hair is still not covered as you might have wished, please troubleshoot why. If you remain uncertain, we have plenty information available on the application process.

Should I Dry My Hair With A Blow Dryer During The Application?

We do not suggest the use of a hair dryer until the entire treatment is complete, and you have conditioned your hair. Follow the application instructions suited for your hair type and condition

What to expect when mixing powder and liquids

Powder Colour The three powder sachets included in the HAIRPRINT Colour Restorer kit may be white, ash brown or brown when opening. The colour of the contents does not determine the outcome of the treatment or the efficacy of the treatment.

What to expect when mixing colour – the mixtures will swell and change colour from salmon through to a dark red. At that point, you begin to apply. As the mixture oxidises with the air, it will go very dark and look black. Your hair will not be this dark.

Restore powder and liquid, expand into a mousse. Complete powder and liquid do not expand as much and stays like a gel and produces a gentle heat. The heat opens the hair making it more receptive to the final step.

Mixture Stood For More Than 6 Minutes. Can I Still Use It?

Unfortunately, you cannot use the mixture after it is left standing untouched for more than six minutes. Each step must be applied within 5 – 6 minutes of mixing, or it becomes less active after this time.

What If I Leave A Step On Shorter Or Longer Than 15 Min?

Leaving the HAIRPRINT treatment on for less than 15 minutes will not produce optimal results. Extending the processing time to 20-30 time will only make a difference with facial hair.

I Mixed The Wrong Contents

If you have confused the Restore sachets with Complete sachets in any way, discontinue treatment and start again. We are here to help if you need to ask any questions.

Protecting previously chemically treated hair – Transition Tips

Hair compromised by chemicals needs protection before applying HAIRPRINT.

To transition from (previously) chemically treated hair to HAIRPRINT, we would advise that your new hair growth is as substantial as 2cm in length. If your new growth is not as significant as what would be ideal,  stretch it as far as you can. We have had satisfactory results on smaller regrowth’s, especially on the finer hair types.

Before using the HAIRPRINT Colour Restorer kit, cleanse the hair with our cleanser shampoo range. This range has been designed to remove all the blockers that coat your hair and scalp. The ideal cleansing shampoo depends on what daily products you have been using, the condition of your scalp, and the state of the water used to wash your hair i.e. is it chemically laden?

Below is a list of our cleanser shampoos that will help you identify which one is ideal for you.

1.Clarifying Shampoo – Removes build-up from the hair.

2.Exfoliating Shampoo – Removes impurities and dry skin cells that block the follicles and cuticles.

3.Chelating Shampoo – Removes minerals from hard water and chlorine deposits.

We recommend you begin using the cleansing shampoos at least 24 – 48 hours before using HAIRPRINT Colour Restorer treatment. In doing this, you will remove any residue and build-up, detoxing the hair and scalp, readying it for HAIRPRINT.

If you have hard water, begin your treatment process with our Chelating Shampoo,  which works as a clarifying shampoo, chelator, mineral and oxidizer remover in one. On application day, wash your select hair with the Chelating Shampoos before you begin the full HAIRPRINT Colour Restorer application process.

Thoroughly wash your hair with the Prepare sachet, as directed in the kit

  • Wet hair and shampoo with the whole sachet in the kit, unless your hair is very short or incredibly fine.
  • Allow the shampoo to work through your hair for at least 5 – 30 minutes.
  • Rinse well.
  • Towel dry hair well on the ends that need protecting.
  • To protect the previously chemically treated hair, use real butter (coconut or shea butter). Once melted or softened enough to apply, work through the hair you are protecting.
  • This coating will not rinse off during the 3 step application of the kit. AVOID OILS.
  • If the area or colour line from where you need to protect is not visible wet, gently dry with a hand held dryer.
  • Once the oils are applied, use a water spray dampen the root area again. Applying to dry hair is not advised it will cause you to use more product than you need.
  • Follow the standard application for the roots from Step 1.
  • Once the all three stages have completed, thoroughly rinse then Shampoo and Condition to finish the process.
  • The protected ends might feel heavy from the butter. If this is the case apply shampoo to dry hair the next time you wash.

How chemicals damage hair and how to repair it

Chemicals damage hair not only externally but cause havoc on the internal genetic makeup found in the cortex of the hair shaft which is in essence, the hair’s ‘print’ (map).

The print or map of your hair shaft is often no longer present in chemically treated hair.

Damage done from chemicals and how to restore the vitality
Chemically damaged hair is more porous than healthy natural hair.

It takes time and nurturing to restore chemically damaged hair back to its natural state.

Hair dyes, perms, relaxers, and wave products change the natural hair matrix while doing what they are tasked to do. Aside from the fact that chemicals can cause acute dermatitis without warning, these chemicals are electron scavengers that take any atom they can find, including from cells inside the hair follicles. This damages the melanocyte and keratinocyte cells in the follicle (these cells make your skin and hair colour). Over time, this may accelerate the rate at which your hair loses its colour, and causes grey with diminished quality.

The result is hair that is dull, thinner and brittle.  If you make a start the journey, your hair will be healthier long into your life.

If your hair is chemically damaged and you are experiencing severe split ends and brittle/broken hair, this extent of pre-existing damage makes the hair fragile and possibly prone to further damage. The best cure for damaged hair is healthy new growth. We only recommend treating new growth when your hair and scalp are ready. It will be best to rebalance both before using HAIRPRINT. It’s a process to restore the vitality of the hair but well worth it!

*Our selection of shampoos and conditioners can facilitate this, remove residues and prepare the hair while you grow out your roots for a HAIRPRINT application. Make sure you are using the right colour. If you are not getting the results you want and need any guidance, please complete the free advice form or make contact. We are here to help.

Troubleshooting coverage, right natural colour

1. Coverage

Uneven Grey Coverage - Spotty, Poor or Minimal Coverage

If the coverage is minimal or there is uneven coverage, it may be due to incorrect application of the product. Being mechanical when applying to hair or roots is imperative for all three steps. If the product is just “painted” on to the hair, the result will not be optimum.

Work the Colour Restorer treatment into the hair like you would a mask/conditioner.

No Coverage or Partial Coverage of Grey

If HAIRPRINT can access the hair, it will work! Go through the 5 point checklist to identify why your coverage is not as you had wished. If you have not gotten the result you expected, please contact us,  we are happy to troubleshoot with you.

2. Colour

Darker than Normal Hair Colour

It takes approximately 7-10 days for HAIRPRINT to stabilise within the hair. During this period the hair may appear darker than your natural colour. After this time, the colour and tone will adjust to your natural colour.

If you have hair that is free of bleach, dyes and other chemicals but you are experiencing a darker than normal hair colour just after applying HAIRPRINT, please allow for this adjustment period.

Sometimes our natural colour can be darker than we expect. The hair and its continuous exposure to chlorine, shampoo, sunlight, and the environment are what we see every day. However, when restoring our real hair colour,  often appears darker than we realised. In addition, as we age, our hair gets darker.

If your hair has been subject to bleach, dyes or other chemical processing and you are experiencing a colour darker than usual; attribute this colour change to the level of porosity in your hair.

Porous hair takes up more colour than normal. Dyes and bleaches progressively damage the external and internal structure of the hair to strip and remove natural colour. They then deposit aniline or coal tar dyes in its place.

When the internal colour structure of the hair is damaged; the pigment is no longer structured properly. It is here when the processed hair turns darker. The good news is that new hair growth contains your correct colour and when using HAIRPRINT, the new hair will show your natural colour.

Please go to Transition Tips to ensure that does not happen again.

If you feel you’d like to lighten your hair colour, we recommend using lemon juice as the best way to do this.

Hot oil treatments will also help lift and remove colour while naturally conditioning the hair. Use natural raw oils like coconut, olive oil, or grape seed oil. You may also use a few drops of your favourite essential oil to scent the treatment and make it a bit stronger. Here is a link to an article with visual examples and steps by step directions: How to make a hot oil treatment.

Chelating Shampoo can bind to eumelanin and also lift colour out slowly. Using this every 5-7 days to remove colour slowly.

You can follow the above processes or recipes as many times as you like on any darkened sections of hair.   The lemon process typically lightens one shade per application. The oil treatment varies and depends on how long you leave the treatment on your hair. You may leave a hot oil treatment on for up to 3 hours, and it will remove 1-2 shades of colour per treatment. You can follow with use of one our Clarifying, Chelating or Exfoliating Shampoos to remove any residual oils as these often help remove some colour as well.

Fading colour at the roots

Overproduction of sebum, a waxy coating made by the sebaceous glands, can coat the root hairs and prevent HAIRPRINT from working. If unremoved, the HAIRPRINT pigment can adhere to the sebum on the outside of the hair and rub or wash off in a few days.

Overproduction is caused by overactive sebaceous glands (oily skin) or by using shampoos that are too harsh, shampoos that strip the scalp and stimulate the glands.

If you are experiencing fading at the roots, we recommend adding a wash with a Clarifying Shampoo before using the Pretreatment to help cleanse your scalp of sebum and oils that are coating the hair.

Continue to use the Clarifying Shampoo in the future before you apply HAIRPRINT.

Fading colour on all the hair

If your hair colour is fading after a week or two, it is most likely due to residue on the outside of the hair. Many hair care substances create a coating on the outside of the hair that HAIRPRINT adheres to, and it will wash away as you shampoo your hair over a week or two.

Please read through our Blocker FAQ and evaluate the ingredients in your hair care products.

Brassy Colour

A ‘brassy’ colour may appear after a few weeks and can be due to some factors, so please read through the list and see which one applies to your situation.

  1. Your shampoo and conditioner contain sulphates. Please check your shampoo/conditioner and discontinue if necessary.
  2. You have Hard Water with iron minerals. These can build up on the hair and affect your colour either immediately or over time. Please add a Chelating Shampoo into your monthly hair care regimen.
  3. You unknowingly have henna in your shampoo and conditioner that can be more fully activated by HAIRPRINT. Please check the ingredients of your shampoo and conditioner carefully and discontinue it if necessary.
  4. You are exposed to the sun regularly. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, please wear a hat and cover your hair as often as possible. UV opens up the hair and causes pigment to wash out.

The brassy colour should not return after your next HAIRPRINT application as long as you remove the underlying cause of the colour change.

Green Or Blue Tinge To The Hair

If you see either a green or blue tinge to your hair after using the HAIRPRINT Colour Restorer Kit, this can be due to the prior use of bleach or from chlorine in your hair. The green is usually caused by the copper found in chlorinated swimming pools. Trying to lighten Indigo based henna products can also produce a green or ashy tinge in the hair.  Metallic salts found in dyes and other hair care products can also cause changes in colour.

To neutralize this colour, you can place a coating of ketchup on those sections of hair (it is inexpensive and effective, even if it sounds strange). Work it through the affected parts of your hair as you would a conditioner. You may wish to use a shower cap or wrap those sections in foil to prevent dripping and staining of your clothing. Leave on your hair for 30 minutes. Shampoo and condition your hair as you normally would.

To remove chlorine from your hair before your next application of HAIRPRINT, please read up on blockers.

If you have bleached hair, please follow our Transition Tips.

3. Texture

Dry Hair

HAIRPRINT does not make your hair dry. However, the alkaline Pretreatment can reveal the pre-existing dry state of your hair. We use many products on our hair whose function we do not fully understand. When we remove any ‘artificial’ coatings, it may reveal how dry our hair is.

Dryness is a temporary condition that usually resolves itself within a few days as you shampoo and condition with gentle sulphate free products.

Some additional ideas to help restore the hair’s moisture are:

  1. Instead of washing your hair with shampoo, rinse with a mixture of water and apple cider vinegar in a 4:1 ratio. Condition your hair as usual.
  2. Moisturise your hair with oils like jojoba, almond, and argan.
  3. Use a deep conditioning treatment on your hair.

4. Staining

Clothing and Towels

Hairprint can stain clothing and towels. Please wear and use dark clothing and towels during the application process. Many customers have a dedicated Hairprint application shirt that they only wear during the application process, as well as a dedicated Hairprint towel that they use each time. You may also want to wear a Hairdressing Cape to protect your clothing.

HAIRPRINT can stain porous surfaces. We recommend wearing gloves at all times when using this product. HAIRPRINT is considered to be an “organic matter stain”.

To prevent staining of your sink, bathtub, or other surfaces, please wipe away HAIRPRINT splatters after each application step.

Non-porous material/Sealed surfaces: To remove stains, use soap and water.

Porous material: OxiClean® or any similar non-chlorine organic bleach can remove organic matter stains. If the stains are stubborn a paste of 1:1 water to product left on for 24-48 hours should remove stains.

For especially stubborn stains, customers have reported the Mr Clean MagicEraser® handles them well.

*For special materials: Please make sure you always follow any product manufacturer directions as certain materials may not be suited to particular types of cleanser or traditional removal techniques.*

HAIRPRINT can stain the skin if left on for too long. The pigmentation of the skin will be temporary. The following suggestions will eliminate or minimise staining:

Please note: The drier your skin is, the more likely it will be to stain.

  1. Wear gloves at all times when using this product.
  2. Apply a thin coat of pure shea butter on your forehead and temples, blocking HAIRPRINT from accessing your skin there.
  3. Wear and use dark clothing and towels during the application process. Many customers have a dedicated HAIRPRINT shirt, towel and washcloth to use each time they apply the product.
  4. After each step of the HAIRPRINT process, take a few minutes with a wet washcloth to wipe away HAIRPRINT on the forehead. Be sure to rinse out your washcloth each time.

Scalp Staining

HAIRPRINT can stain the skin of the scalp when the skin is dehydrated, or when there is a buildup of dry skin cells there. The pigmentation of the skin is temporary.

If this occurs, you may see flakes of colour falling off of your head. These are the pigmented dry skin cells from your scalp in the natural shedding process of your skin.

Please note: The drier your skin is, the more likely it will be to stain, and the more flakes you may see.

If this occurs, please do one or all of the following when you wash your hair to loosen and remove the pigmented skin cells:

  • Use your fingers to scrub your scalp.
  • Exfoliate your scalp with a scalp scrub or use a Scalp Massage Brush to clean your scalp.

Uneven Coverage

Uneven coverage can also be attributed to the build–up of residues on areas of the hair that have not been removed properly by the Prepare or pre–treatment. Have a look at blockers that can get in the way of HAIRPRINT restoring your colour.

Some hair types are more porous than others:

  • Grey is more accepting of hair colour than white hair.
  • Finer hair absorbs hair colour easier than coarse hair.

For stubborn areas that are not achieving the coverage (often at the temple and sideburn areas) use baking soda during the Prepare process. Working it into the resistant areas when the pretreatment is lathered up on the hair. You can also leave the Prepare on the hair for longer (20–30 minutes) this will open the cuticles more, especially with very coarse/resistant hair including facial hair.

We highly recommend the Chelating, Clarifying or Exfoliating Shampoo’s before you start your to restore your natural colour.

Other factors that may prevent HAIRPRINT Colour Restorer treatment from not giving you the result you want include:

  • Using an incorrect amount of HAIRPRINTfor the length of your hair or percentage of grey
  • How long your hair has been grey for
  • What your hair history is
  • Porosity of your hair
  • Regularly use products on your hair
