HAIRPRINT can work for you if you have the following:

Light Brown to black hair

Light Brown to black hair and everything in between. HAIRPRINT works on all shades of brown and black hair and is suited for all ethnicity and genders. When you are determining the best colour to use, look at the hair at the nape of your neck or the colour of your natural eyebrow. Using the Colour Chart see which colour of the three available for dark hair is best for you. If you find that you are between two colours, we recommend choosing a darker colour. If your hair is chemically treated please read up on our transition tips for the best results. Go through the different application methods to establish what is best for you.

Dye and chemical free hair

Dye and chemical free hair – When hair is natural (untreated by chemicals/dyes), the HAIRPRINT treatment can function at its best. If your hair is naturally brown, you can follow the standard application. Please read up on the things that can block HAIRPRINT from penetrating the hair. Hair that is residue free will have the best results. If HAIRPRINT can penetrate the hair, it works.

Chemical sensitivities

Chemical sensitivities – Customers find HAIRPRINT because they are seeking an alternative to conventional hair colouring and the discomfort they experience. The ingredients are safe, are mostly edible and hypoallergenic.

All grey or white hair

All grey/white hair – HAIRPRINT is a gentle treatment for your hair. Because your ‘ hair print’ is unique, we cannot claim that everyone who tries it will have the same results. Just as we don’t know the number of applications you will need to give you the effect you want. White hair is less porous and does not have all its pigment. Meaning that your white hair may be stubborn to accepting HAIRPRINT. If complete coverage of your grey or white hair is what you are after, you might need the resistant application method. You are in control of the amount of pigment going back into the hair, therefore, the coverage. Read more on application methods.

Body art quality Henna

Body art quality Henna – If you are using 100 % pure body art quality, where the listed ingredients are either: henna and indigo ONLY, HAIRPRINT can then safely be applied. If however, you have compound henna on your hair, please DO NOT use the HAIRPRINT treatment. For more information, please read our Compound Henna post to learn more.

Residue-Free Hair

Residue-Free Hair – HAIRPRINT is a gentle treatment for all hair, a natural process doing what the body does. Read more on hair residue, it is also imperative to understand the blockers that can inhibit HAIRPRINT.

Relaxed, Permed or Waved Hair

If you have processed your brown, dark or light brown hair in any of the following ways relaxed, permed or ‘waved’, we recommend that you do not use HAIRPRINT Colour Restore treatment. Please read Transition Tips to learn how to protect your processed hair during treatment.

It is important to note that relaxing your hair, perming or having a wave treatment changes and destroys the internal structure of your hair. The above treatments work by using high levels of chemicals to change your natural hair matrix making it completely different. For example, curly hair becomes straight or straight hair becomes wavy/curly. These chemicals blow open the follicle to get inside the hair and stay within it for periods to maintain that new structure. Making the hair prone to damage as these chemicals can react to any new treatments.

Using HAIRPRINT all over will cause your processed hair to become too dark and may even cause further complications due to pre-existing damage.  If you do not wish to use this longer more involved process of HAIRPRINT application, we completely understand. We would then suggest that you wait until the damaged hair has grown out completely before applying HAIRPRINT.

HAIRPRINT can work for you with further understanding and preparation of how the product works if

Dyed, Relaxed, Permed, Bleached, Highlighted Hair

HAIRPRINT restores the pigment to your genetic hair structure. If your hair has been permed, bleached, dyed or undergone any other chemical processing, the structure of the hair is damaged, the hair more porous. Porous hair absorbs too much colour. Even if you have not processed or dyed your hair recently and the processed hair is still present, there is structural damage done to the hair. If you are applying Hairprint over processed/damaged hair, it will darken. Structurally damaged hair can darken up to 1-5 shades past your natural colour. Using a lighter than natural colour to avoid darkening is not recommended. For enhanced results, we will always recommend that you use the appropriate Hairprint Colour selection that matches your natural colour. Apply only to your roots and new growth. Our Transition Tips post details the application process.

Blonde Hair

HAIRPRINT restores natural hair colour to black and brown hair only. The USA are diligently working to develop a blonde formula. We don’t have a release date yet. To keep abreast of upcoming product releases, please sign up to our mailing list.

Henna Products

If you are using quality henna or indigo, you can safely HAIRPRINT over it. Body Art Quality Henna consists of henna/indigo ingredients only. If you are unsure, get an analysis of the components from the product manufacturer. If you are using a compound henna powder or cream, we recommended that you DO NOT USE Hairprint until the Henna is thoroughly absent from your hair. HAIRPRINT should not be used over compound henna products because these products often produce unpredictable results. Compound henna sometimes fades to strange colours due to the presence of synthetic dyes.

Permed Hair

HAIRPRINT is not suitable if you continue to perm your hair. Perms use strong chemicals to break the sulphide bonds in the hair. The hair becomes damaged during this process, making it porous, dry and fragile. Porous hair absorbs too much colour, and if you are applying HAIPRINT, the treatment will cause your hair to become darker than your natural hair colour. HAIRPRINT may relax the curl of the perm because the natural pigments created during the HAIRPRINT treatment process creates proteins, which strengthen the hair. If you have recently permed your hair or have done so in the past, please wait at least 8 – 10 weeks before applying the HAIRPRINT Colour Restore treatment.

Relaxed hair that is dark

The best results will be obtained with HAIRPRINT if you stop relaxing your hair and then follow our transition tips. Relaxers damage your hair, making it porous. If your natural colour matches Dark (1/2 on the colour chart),  HAIRPRINT can be used to cover all of your hair. If you must continue to relax your hair, it is best to apply HAIRPRINT one week after relaxing.

Note: Relaxers damage and dry out hair, products used to restore the hair will use oils and silicones. Our pre-treatment (Prepare) is designed to remove these coatings on your hair. After doing so, your hair may feel dry. Deep conditioning will remedy the innate dryness. When choosing a deep conditioner product, please consult our list of blockers in orders to select one that will work best with HAIRPRINT.

If you are a swimmer or always find yourself in pools that are chlorinated, on the day of your HAIRPRINT application, we recommend washing your hair with our clarifying shampoo before using the Pre–treatment. Please see our hair residue post about removing build-up from the hair. If you are going to continue to expose your hair to chlorinated water, a swim cap will prevent the chlorinated water from stripping the HAIRPRINT colour and drying out your hair. You can also protect the hair further by using a non-water soluble coating like shea butter on the hair under the swim cap.

Bleach in Your Hair

When using HAIRPRINT on bleached hair that has been compromised it can cause unpredictable colour results. We recommend that you only apply HAIPRINT to hair growth at the roots by following one of the application methods with transition tips.

Hard Water

Hard water contains magnesium, calcium and other mineral salts more than 180 ppm; this includes well or borehole water. Hard water causes a mineral build up on the hair. To remove the minerals, use our chelating shampoo with EDTA as an ingredient before using HAIRPRINT. If unremoved, the mineral deposits will block the treatment from accessing the hair. Using chelating shampoo and deep conditioning on a monthly basis can eliminate mineral deposits, prevent dryness, and restore your hair.

Oily Hair or Oily Scalp

Overproduction of sebum can coat the hair and prevent HAIRPRINT from accessing and colouring the roots. The pigment will adhere to the sebum on the outside of the hair, rubbing off in a few washes/days. Overproduction of sebum – caused by overactive sebaceous glands (oily skin) or by using shampoos that are too strong, strip the hair and scalp. Most shampoos can remove the build-up of sebum, however for this to happen, the hair must be massaged, and shampoo must be worked thoroughly into the scalp. Ensure that you wash with warm water, not hot, as you do not want to overstimulate the glands. Should you be worried about the amount of build-up, we recommend that on the day of the HAIRPRINT application you wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo, before washing with the Pre-treatment. For more information, please read our post on hair residue.

Hair Gloss or Hair Glaze

Depending on the ingredients, gloss or a glaze can enter the cuticle of the hair or adhere to the outside of the hair. Glazes can also be tinted to add colour. Many of these products are not so different to products which are used to our make car seats and dashboards shiny; as they contain the polysiloxane family of silicone products.

HAIRPRINT will not be able to work if your hair is glossed or glazed. Removed by using an effective clarifying and chelating shampoo. Please discontinue use of the gloss or glaze for at least two weeks before applying HAIRPRINT.

Keratin as a treatment or an ingredient

Keratin treatments are highly discouraged as they glue protein onto the hair. Although Keratin is the same protein as your hair, it prevents HAIRPRINT from working. It cannot be removed by using our Pre-Treatment Shampoo you will need our clarifying shampoo. You will need to wait at least 2 months for a keratin treatment to naturally dissipate before applying HAIRPRINT.

Please note: it can last as long as 6 months on your hair. If you have keratin listed as an ingredient in your hair care product, please discontinue use and wait 3 weeks before applying HAIRPRINT. Please read out hair residue article to learn about more hair care product ingredients that may prevent HAIRPRINT from working properly.

Proteins in Shampoos and Conditioners

Proteins in shampoos and conditioners can last from a few days to a few weeks depending on the size of the protein and how it is applied. Larger proteins adhere to the cuticle, while smaller proteins lodge inside the cortex of the hair. Discontinue the use of products that contain these ingredients allowing a waiting period of 10-14 days ensuring that most of the protein has been removed from your hair before applying HAIRPRINT.

Castile Soap

Please avoid using Castile soaps on your hair, they adhere to and clog the hair cuticle. Discontinue use of the product for 5-7 days before applying HAIRPRINT. Help to remove the soap residue from the hair shaft by using a clarifying shampoo wash the hair on the day of the HAIRPRINT application before washing with the Pre-treatment.
